The Hellions of Troy are a new team to the world of Roller Derby and could always use financial support towards uniforms, practice space, travel costs, paying other leagues to bout us, merchandise, marketing and so on. We own our team, do not have a manager; this is grass roots yo! We look to the local and national community for sponsorship towards these needs. This time, we are putting our derby love and energy towards helping one of our own injured skaters.

Fresh Meat, Chicken Mole came to one of our November recruitment nights at Rollarama and decided to join and become a roller derby chick. Her two young children also came along and entertained themselves on skates, and also entertained the team with their bravery on wheels and silly demeanor. She continued to practice with us and got very comfortable on skates in just a couple weeks. I was amazed at how fast she advanced her skills.

Roller Derby is a very aggressive sport and injuries do come with the territory. Showing off and taking photographs of black and blue bruises from ass cheeks to shoulders is a common practice with skaters; but it’s not so funny when bones break or ligaments tear. It is frustrating to sit out and watch the sport you want to play but you never lose support from your derby family. Chicken Mole had a bad collision on December 8th and felt like her ankle came unattached from her foot. EEEKS!! After a few Doctor visits she learned what the list of injuries are: her ankle shifted out of place, she has a broken fibula, and the tendons became disrupted. The doctor said two screws and a plate should fix it. After her December 15th surgery she’s suffered with a lot of pain and she’ll be out of work for awhile. An injury can also break your spirit so it’s important for us to be there for each other when we’re down and out.

Some Other injured Hellions are:
Yukon Kizmyas: Injured shoulder: Supraspinatus tendon tear, bicep tendon needs to be reattached, bone spurs on the acromion had to get scraped off. He went in for surgery December 1st and will be in recovery for awhile.
Detrimental Diva: Injured Knee from June 20th bout.
Mathundra Storm: Injured Knee from June 20th bout: Torn PCL.
Julietta Vendetta: Injured knee from years of roller derby injuries, had surgery in December.
Missy Misdemeanor Hellahit: sprained ankle, out for a couple weeks.
Scarbucks: continues to skate with knee injuries like bursitis.

The Winter Break Fundraiser is an awesome morale booster and we hope that not only will this raise Chicken Mole’s spirit; but will be a substantial financial contribution to her medical costs. The Roller Derby community steps up when the health care system isn’t supporting the people that need it! We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to skating with the new RoboDerby woman. Our fundraiser also illustrates that there are many non skating men and women in the league that VOLUNTEER their love and time in bout production, fundraising, marketing and the many aspects of keeping a business successful. Come join us in the fun and get surrounded by great people and love. P4th is an awesome and steady bar owned by Art Fredette who has been a big support for local musicians. Monday October 5, 2009 @ Rollerama in Schenectady, NY

The Hellions hosted a recruitment night in a very timely fashion with the premier of the major motion picture “Whip It”. We reach out to the community to recruit volunteers, refs, and players; we are always looking for more derby lovers and curious cats. Men are welcome to participate as volunteers, and skating and non skating refs; but the rostered skaters are left to the women because there are no balls in derby. We promoted the event with the tag lines: “ Put on some skates & be your own HERO!” and “Find your Tribe”. Roller Derby has been buzzing around the country for years, but this movie has helped promote the sport even more.

The Hellions attracted a whopping ELEVEN prospects; that’s almost enough for an entire roster! We ran practice as usual with drills and skills while the fresh meat prospects slapped on some rental skates and gave it a go. The experienced skaters assisted those that were uneasy on the wheels. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never skated before; we welcome everyone!

The men and women that showed up ranged in age from18 to their 30’s. We were blessed with the presence of an interested mother as her adorable daughter sat and watched. As all 35+ of us got in a big circle and introduced ourselves; I noticed the newcomers giggling and getting a kick out of hearing our fabulous derby names. We explained what derby has done for us and we could all agree that it’s hard to imagine our lives before derby. We got into roller derby for reasons like: that it rubbed off onto someone else, wanting to be part of a rad community, sisterhood, brotherhood, supporting strong kick ass women, empowering the self, getting in shape and getting back into sports. It was great to see the seasoned fresh meat share their encouragement for the next possible generation of fresh meat. Roller Derby has a big learning curve for beginners but it’s totally empowering to see people make enormous improvements with their skills in just a couple months. Once you get it you can’t stop. Joining a roller derby team may be the best thing you could ever do for your body and spirit. The recruits came from different walks of life as a high school student, college students, mothers, artists, and full time workers.

To continue our introductions, we learned how successful our promotions are doing. We attracted people from facebook, twitter, myspace, our bouts and promotional events. Our ‘Whip It” theater appearances at Crossgates, BowTie and The Spectrum brought at least 5 women to our recruitment night! Ida Feltersnatch had a great idea for everyone to share their favorite bands. From that we got music interests like: The Dropkick Murphy’s, Britney Spears, Green Day, Muse, Steve Miller, Spanish Music, Slayer, A Perfect Circle, and many obscurely named bands.

We finished the evening off with scrimmaging black against colors. The recruits, refs and volunteers got in the middle of the track to experience the referee’s point of view. The recruits left with a positive and entertaining first time skating experience and a wide open door to roller derby amazingness. They got a first hand look at the sport and a sustainable and progressive community. The team left with more than enough recruits to stay in touch with. The Hellions continue to build on their foundation, grow and evolve. Who knows who will be the next fresh meat…….

Break out that tuxedo your Uncle was buried in, or that moth-eaten wedding dress your Grandma gave you when it looked like you might live long enough to tie the knot, and come down to The Linda to dance your limbs off at the Zombie Prom.

Only those 21+ years of age (with ID) will be admitted. Cost is $8 per undead. A portion of the proceeds go toward the Hellions of Troy Roller Derby League, who also enjoy ripping arms off of the living. See you at the Zombie Feast!

Then, this past Saturday, the Hellions were invited as the special guests of Crossgates Cinema 18 to participate in the Sneak Preview of the new roller derby movie, Whip It! The Hellions had the exclusive privilege of setting up a table to promote roller derby, Whip It!, and—of course—The Hellions of Troy. The cinema provided us with posters to give out to fans and also reserved seating for all of the Hellions in the first two rows of the theater! How cool was that?! We created special pins for the event that, along with the posters, we gave out to loads of people attending the movies.

Just as we will be doing at multiple theaters this coming weekend for the Opening Weekend of the movie, we talked with theatre-goers about roller derby in the Capital Region and what it’s like to be a member of the Hellions of Troy Roller Derby league. The response was overwhelming!!! We had so many people come over to talk with our league members that we’re certain our October 5 recruiting event will be a rousing success. Did I mention that the Hellions turned out for this special opportunity to the tune of more than 25 league members?! We had skaters, referees, coaches, staff and fans present. We definitely generate a lot of excitement when we’re all dressed derby in our can’t-miss-’em-pink-and-green Hellions colors!

There was a ton of interest from folks just walking through the mall as well. Next weekend, the Hellions will again be out in full force to greet the movie-going public at special events at three local theaters. Stay tuned for details!!!
